What Kinds Of Auto Racing Are There?

Stock Car Racing

Stock car racing is an extremely popular form of auto racing in North America. NASCAR is the dominant force in Stock Car Racing. Most races are held on oval tracks like the Talladega and Daytona superspeedways. The United States is synonymous with NASCAR stock racing and auto racing.

Although cars are known for their “stock” appearance, they can be very fast. Stock cars can travel an average speed of 200 mph in tight spaces and banked turns, thanks to modifications to the engine or the interior.

Sports Car Racing

Open-wheel racing and stock racing are different in that sports car racing is always derived from production-level vehicles. Two types of sports cars are available: Grand Tourers (or GT for short), which are two-seat vehicles made by Ford, Porsche, or Ferrari. Prototype Cars can be one-seat and look sleeker and more elegant than the average GT.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 24 Hours are two of the most famous races. Daytona is home to the FIA World Endurance Championships, which are the most well-known series. Sports car races can be very long, like Le Mans. They feature multiple drivers per vehicle who switch off during the race.

Drag Racing

Everybody has seen videos of cars driving at speeds of less than half a kilometer and accelerating off the starting line. Everybody has seen parachutes fall from the back of cars as they cross the finish line in an attempt to slow them down. Drag racing is what you see.

There are hundreds of classes in drag racing, and cars can have many different designs. Drag racing is a variety of formats, so any car can be entered into a drag race.

Kart Racing

Open-wheel, 100-pound karts are used by racers. They use only a small engine and a tube chassis. They are small, lightweight vehicle that performs well in races.

Rally Racing

Rally racing is essentially a timed relay. Teams start in a staggered fashion. The drivers take off at various points along the track and then “rally” along the course, crossing multiple stages to achieve the fastest time. It’s a time trial between the clock and other teams.
